Each year a plague of products that do not meet Australian Standards are recalled from under Christmas trees across the country, with parents and children seemingly unaware of the dangers they face.
Last financial year more than 800 product lines were recalled, representing an increase of around 350 per cent over the past 10 years, and the problem appears set to continue.
The General Manager of Product Certification for the international safety body, SAI Global Limited, Mr Mario Battaglia, said: “In the last six months alone more than 350 product lines have already been recalled with everything from Christmas tree candles to remote control cars being called into question.”
“We all want to have a safe Christmas but unfortunately this is the season to be wary, with many products on the market not meeting minimum safety standards,” said Mr Battaglia.
“From Christmas lights to crackers and toys to power tools, to guard against turning your Christmas treats into potential seasonal serial killers always look for the 5tick safety mark.”
“The 5tick mark demonstrates that the product you have purchased has been rigorously tested to meet some of the world’s toughest safety Standards. It also indicates that the manufacturer’s facilities, no matter where they are in the world, have been checked by SAI to rigorous quality standards.”
